Michael Christopher Mumford (my Soulmate) was born March 13, 1955 (our family’s lucky Friday) to Lyle Neff (Chris) and Barbara Mumford in Salt Lake City, Utah. He lost his father at the young age of six and was lovingly raised by his Mother along with his two beautiful sisters, Sue (Mrs. Glenn Miller), and Wendy (Scott). He had a great childhood and met his lifelong friend Steve Heisel at Murray High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Michael and I met in May 1988 and were married on July 7, 1989. For the past 31 years we have truly enjoyed our life together. He has been a loving husband, father to our beautiful Daughter April, and Son –in-Law Michael (Snyder), and Bop Bop (Grandpa) to our beautiful grandchildren Macey and Drake who he loved with all of his heart. Michael was also a wonderful son, son-in law, brother, brother- in-law, uncle to John, Chris, Mike, Lance, Todd, and a true friend.
Michael’s 40 plus year aviation and military career took him many places around the United States and the world. He was an Air Traffic Controller in the military and as a civilian before he transitioned to a successful Airline Operations career. He served with the Air Force in Okinawa Japan, Hill Air Force Base, and later in life as a private contractor running the airfield for the military at Kandahar Air Force Base in Afghanistan for a brief and challenging time. His 22 year tenure at SkyWest Airlines was very fulfilling to him. He directed and led the flight control department through tremendous years of growth, building a very strong foundation upon which the company continues to thrive. Michael also enjoyed success with United Airlines as Director of their ATC systems on the East Coast and their company towers across the country. We are so very proud of his accomplishments.
Michael loved all sports, running, biking, baseball, weight training and more. In his younger years before we met, he was drafted to play for the minor baseball league with the Los Angeles Angels, which he enjoyed immensely. For the past several years his favorite however, has been golf. He enjoyed golfing with his grandson Drake, and a great group of friends each week at The Ledges and was fortunate to participate in many local tournaments. He also loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He was very proud of Drake and Macey in all they accomplished in sports and Macey’s beautiful art talent.
My loving soulmate lost his 2 ½ year courageous and vigorous battle with Cancer on his 64th Birthday, March 13, 2019. He kept his promise to me, and fought bravely to be here with us on the morning of his birthday. We will miss him terribly and know he is watching over us and protecting us. His biggest love in life was his family and we will celebrate his life quietly together, just as he wanted. Thank you baby, for your strength, love, protection, and caring, and for all of the wonderful times and experiences we shared together.
A special thanks to our family and friends for your loving support through this difficult time in our lives, now and always.
