Carlie Leona Archibald

March 18, 1934 — April 24, 2025

McMinnville, OR

Carlie Leona Roberts Archibald passed away peacefully April 24, 2025, in Washington, Utah. She was 91.

Carlie was born to Lester William and Leona Carter Roberts March 18, 1934, in Minersville, Utah. She had five siblings: Vance, Beryl, Eleanore, Coy, and Rollin. Raised in the shadow of the Great Depression and the Second World War, Carlie and her siblings learned to work hard and to look out for and love one another. Although they knew the meaning of sacrifice, they never wanted for the important things in life.

To entertain themselves in the evenings growing up, Carlie and her siblings pushed the living room furniture out of the way so they could dance to the music on the radio. Carlie and Eleanore’s best dance partners were always their brothers, and they continued dancing together throughout their lives. Music always brought her joy. Although she wished she had learned to play piano when she was young like her sister, Carlie’s love of riding horses outweighed that desire—a passion she shared with her father.

Carlie attended Minersville Elementary School as a child. She completed her freshman year at Milford High School and then transferred to Beaver High School. The summer before her senior year, Lester and Leona bought a ranch in Starr Valley, Nevada. Carlie graduated from Wells High School in 1952 as the class salutatorian.

Carlie married Jack Willard Anderson June 12, 1953. They worked and lived on a ranch near Starr Valley and had four children: Robert, Lisa, Kallie, and Chad. Carlie and Jack divorced in 1962, after which she moved with her children to McMinnville, Oregon.

Several years after settling in McMinnville, Carlie accepted an administrative assistant position at Hewlett Packard (then called Field Emission Corporation, an extension of Linfield College’s Research Institute focused on developing cardiological and radiological devices). During her 28 years with Hewlett Packard, she raised her family and earned an associate degree in business administration. She was disciplined in her studies and prided herself on using proper grammar and writing well.

Carlie married Lyman Reed Archibald January 12, 1985. Their marriage was solemnized two years later in the Seattle, Washington Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After retiring in the mid 1990s, Carlie and Lyman traveled the United States extensively in their motor home and enjoyed the beauty and history they experienced. They loved spending time on the Oregon Coast and were snowbirds for many years in Arizona and Southern Utah. But they could not wait to get home to McMinnville in the spring to tend to the flower garden and relish in the beautiful Oregon summer and fall—she always said, “there is no place more beautiful than home.”

Anyone who ever knew Carlie or visited her home in McMinnville knew she loved to garden, another passion she shared with her father. She spent many happy hours tending to her flowers and creating a sanctuary for all who had the pleasure of sitting among its beauty, including the hummingbirds and canaries. Her yard was the envy of the neighborhood, and it always looked stunning. It seemed there was never a weed or stray blade of grass to be found. Her roses were the pride and joy of her garden. Every July, Carlie would gather the Gravenstein apples that fell from a tree in her yard to make pie, a delicacy that did not last too long after it came out of the oven. She planted that apple tree when she moved into her home in 1966. Carlie passed her love of gardening (and apple pie) on to her grandchildren.

Above all, Carlie loved and cherished her family. She admired and looked up to her parents. Her sister was always her best friend and confidant, and her brothers ever her protector. She taught her children and grandchildren to chase their dreams but to never forget where they came from. Carlie never missed an opportunity to participate in the sporting events and extracurricular activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She traveled near and far to watch their events and listen to the beautiful music they played. But most of all, she taught her family to love one another unconditionally just as her own parents had.

Carlie leaves a lasting legacy of love. Her home was a sanctuary to all who walked through its door. There was peace in her presence, and love in every hug. But mostly, Carlie cultivated, embraced, and embodied the meaning of serenity in every aspect of her life; a trait she inherited from her mother.

Carlie is preceded in death by her youngest son Chad Anderson; parents Lester and Leona Roberts; each of her siblings and their spouses: Eleanore and Ross Marshall, Vance and Athene Roberts, Beryl and Kathryn Roberts, Coy and Jolene Roberts, and infant brother Rollin Roberts; and two nieces, Konda “Jo” Marshall and Joycelyn Roberts Timothy.

She is survived by her husband Lyman; her children and their spouses: Robert and Mary Anderson, Lisa Anderson, Kallie and Gary Goff, and daughter-in-law Margret Wines Anderson; her grandchildren and their spouses: Jeni Anderson, Truett and Erin Anderson, Kate Roth and Jim Bailey, Cole Roth, Kaila and Erika Zandel, Austin and Brigitta Anderson, Macy and Tyson Putnam, and Clara and Travis Jones; five great-grandchildren: Maggie and Abigail Moore, Trip and Logan Anderson, and Kaleb Roth; and by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday May 17, 2025, at 11 a.m. in Minersville at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Immediately following, Carlie will be laid to rest near her parents, sister, and brothers at the Minersville Cemetery. We will dearly miss her.
