Saint George, UT

Catherine "Cate" Maas passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Southgate Senior Living in St. George, UT. She was 78 years old. Cate was born May 26, 1945, in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter and 4th child of Richard and Virginia Sheehan Maas. She was a graduate of St. Robert School (1959), Holy Angels Academy (1963), and Marquette University (1967) in Milwaukee.

After college, Cate moved to Boston where she taught and worked as a counselor in the Needham School District. During this time, she also earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from Simmons College in Boston. After retiring, she worked as a staunch advocate for two non-profit organizations dear to her heart in Chelsea, MA: La Colaborativa, a partner to Latinx immigrants in Greater Boston; and GreenRoots, a group focused on environmental justice and public health issues. Over the years, she received many awards and a great deal of recognition and appreciation for her outstanding work.

Cate travelled extensively. An avid member of The Appalachian Mountain Club, always packed and ready for new adventure, she enjoyed camping, hiking, and kayaking trips with family and a wide circle of friends. She explored Mexico, Peru, Morocco, the Galapagos Islands, Iceland, Israel, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, and all over the USA.

Cate was preceded in death by her wonderful parents and by her brother Frederick. She is survived by her brother Robert (JoAnn Kemper) Maas; sister Joan Maas (Devona); sister Patricia (Michael) Major; nephews David Maas, Sam Major, Andrew Maas, Nicholas Maas; nieces Karin Maas Stewart, Sheila Maas Weinsheimer, Lauren Major Isaacson; 14 grand nieces/nephews; and many cousins, treasured friends and former colleagues. We will all miss her joyful spirit and love of life.

Grateful appreciation and heartfelt thanks to staff and caregivers at Southgate Senior Living and Atlas Hospice for their warm hearts, professionalism, and kind, loving care.

Donations may be made to La Colaborativa or GreenRoots, both in Chelsea, MA.

A small, private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Hughes Mortuary, St. George, UT.
