Dorothy Inez Spendlove

Dorothy Inez Stauffer Spendlove, 92, passed away the evening of April 5, 2018 in Hurricane, Utah.  She was born on April 11, 1926 in Tonopah, NV to John and Nelle B. Stauffer. Sisters:  Marcie Chadburn and Carole Stauffer.  Brothers: John Stauffer, Don Stauffer,  and Wendell Gray.

Dorothy grew up in Hurricane, Utah and attended Hurricane High School. She married France Brooks Spendlove  October 11, 1941 in Hurricane, Utah and they spent 72 years together living in Boulder City, NV and Hurricane, Ut until his death in 2013.  Since that time she has lived at the Hurricane Beehive House where she made many friends and was treated like a “Queen”.  Her days were filled with reading, playing Bingo, visiting with friends and relatives, listening to Country Music and watching reruns of Andy Griffith and Lawrence Welk.  Her working life revolved around being the Office Manager for Dr. Lee Atkin in St. George for many years. She also served as a matron for the Washington County Sherriff’s Department.  She also owned and operated a thrift shop and beauty shop.  She was involved in many civic projects and was a founding member and first President of the Buenas Amigas Club which raised funds for many civic and charity projects in and around Hurricane.  She has served on the Board of the Dixie Health Care Foundation, the Washington County Library Board, and the Washington County Fair Board.  She served with the organization that established Hurricane City’s Heritage Park and on many city beautification and clean-up projects.  In 1988 she was named outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Hurricane Chamber of Commerce and in 1989 she was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by Hurricane City.  In 1993 Dorothy was among fourteen people honored by Southern Utah University for her significant contributions to the quality of life in Southern Utah.  In 2008 Dorothy and France were honored to serve as the Grand Marshalls of the Peace Days Parade in Hurricane.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Carole (Ron) Wilson and Wallene Creamer and brother-in-law Clifton Spendlove. She is also survived by 8 Grandchildren, 24 Great Grand Children and two Great Great Grandchildren.  She was proud of the fact that there were three sets of twin grandchildren born in the same year!  She was preceded in death by husband, France Spendlove (Poncho) her parents, John and Nelle Stauffer, infant daughter Judith Lynn Spendlove and Grandson Wilson David Thornley.  A memorial service will be held Wednesday April 11th at 11:00am Graveside at the Hurricane City Cemetery. Lunch for friends and family will be after the service at the LDS Church located at 274 S. 100 W. Hurricane Utah.

The family extends their appreciation to the healthcare professionals at Dixie Regional Medical Center and the Sun Tree Home Health and Hospice and to Missy and her staff at the Hurricane Beehive Home for their extraordinary care and kindness to Dorothy. Thank you to all of her lifelong friends that visited often. Time spent with friends and family is what she treasured most.  An extra special thank you to Son In Law Pat Creamer for years of devotion, never ending kindness and love.
