Elmo Syme, age 88, passed away with family by his side on December 29, 2025 at home in St George, Utah. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Elmo was born on November 10, 1937 in Provo, Utah to George Leslie Syme and Janice Warthen. He married JoAnn Saxey on March 5, 1959 in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They were married for 62 years. They raised 6 children in Provo, Utah.
Elmo was raised in Provo, Utah. He graduated from Lincoln High School, where he lettered in track. After graduation he studied Structural Fabrication at the Utah Technical College. He worked at the Brigham Young University Physical Plant as a boiler operator and mechanic. He retired from BYU after 35 years. He operated Syme Saw Service with his dad for 20 years.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served many church callings including the bishopric, activities committee, and the Scouting program. He had three sons and eight grandsons that received their Eagle Scout Award.
Elmo had many talents and hobbies including camping and gardening. He had a passion for woodworking, which included making toys, lamps, candlesticks, Christmas ornaments, cars and trucks. His favorite hobby was Dutch Oven cooking with his wife JoAnn. They started Black Pot cooking and catering, providing delicious meals for numerous events. He was known for his Dutch Oven potatoes and cobblers. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He tried to attend all the activities they were involved in. He was very proud of all their accomplishments.
He is survived by Joyce Dade, Rick (Lori) Syme, Judy (Dan) Harward, Kate (Clay) Stratton, Roy (Tanya) Syme. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife JoAnn, son Ed Syme, great granddaughter Makayla Golding, his parents, George and Janice Syme, sisters Shirley Sheets, Georgia Syme and Ilene Horton.
Visitation for family and friends will be January 3, 2026 from 9:00-10:30 at the Southwind Chapel, 1155 N 1400 W St George, Utah. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00. Interment will be at the St George Cemetery.
