After a long-fulfilled life, Dr. James Walter Millward, age 86, was called home to his loving Heavenly Father surrounded by his family on December 11, 2018. Dr. Millward was born on June 19, 1932 in Salt Lake City (SLC), Utah to James Marion and Elizabeth Esther Lloyd Millward. He graduated from South High School in SLC in 1950. He later attended the University of Utah and the School of Dentistry at the University of Oregon. The very day that he graduated from Dental School, he was inducted into the Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1956. He served as an Army dentist for 2 years and retained the rank of Captain. In 1958, Dr. Millward opened a dental practice in Ashland, Oregon. He moved to SLC, UT in 1978 and to St. George, UT in1988. He practiced dentistry well into his 70’s, and he also taught many people the art of Dentistry throughout his life.
While attending South High, Jim met a beautiful girl named Merelyn Joyce Gray in his English class his junior year. Jim and Merelyn quickly fell in love and were married in the SLC Temple on April 2, 1953. Together they were blessed with 5 sons and 1 daughter. Family was everything to Jim! He loved being with his family and made every member feel like the most important person in the world! Jim’s other loves were flying, hunting, fishing, golfing, BYU football, playing the trumpet, music, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and singing and performing with his sweetheart. His favorite was performing with her as Mr. Santa and Mrs. Claus. Jim was beloved by all and brought joy into many lives! He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes! He will be greatly missed by those who had the honor of knowing him.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents James and Elizabeth Millward and his infant sister Marilyn. He is survived by his beloved wife, Merelyn. Sisters: Marian (Raymond, deceased) Feller and Nancy (William) Sherwood. Children: David (Debbie), Richard (Lorna), Sherie (Stephen), Robert (Wendy), James (Shawnalea), Michael (Lindsay). 50 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Viewings will be held on Sunday December 16th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Hughes Mortuary, 1037 East 700 South, St. George, UT also at the Bloomington Stake Center, 200 W. Brigham Road, St. George, UT on Monday December 17th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington Stake Center. Interment will take place at the Tonaquint Cemetery following the services.
