Joey Leavitt Twitchell, 84, of St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. Born March 31, 1942, in Hurricane, Utah, to Donald Henry Leavitt and Karma Hirschi, Joey grew up in St. George as the spirited eldest of six daughters—arriving just five minutes ahead of her twin sister, Judy. She graduated from Dixie High School, where she proudly performed as one of the original “Jet Propelled Jettettes” (and readily admitted she never learned to spell). Joey and Judy shared an inseparable bond and countless childhood pranks, frequently trading places just to keep everyone guessing. Her sisters remained the heartbeat of her life, and she cherished their regular “sister luncheons” for as long as her health allowed.
On November 24, 1961, Joey married the love of her life, Edrick Carl “Ed” Twitchell, in the St. George Temple. Their adventures took them to Renton, Washington, and Glendale, Arizona, before returning to St. George, Utah. Joey was a pillar of hard work and service in her community. She dedicated 21 years to Lin’s Thriftway where, due to her take-charge leadership and no nonsense approach, she was nicknamed “The General.” She also served as a school lunch lady, baking thousands of famous homemade rolls for the students.
At home, Joey was a master creator who decorated beautiful wedding cakes, crocheted countless gifts for loved ones, and greatly enjoyed family camping trips. Hosting sleepovers for her grandchildren brought her great joy. A devoted, lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joey gave her heart to every calling she held—especially as StakePrimary President, Relief Society President and Teacher, and Stake Camp Director. She said, “If I wasn’t doing something in the church, something was wrong.”
Joey is survived by her four children: Stacey Jo (David) McLean, Tami (Dee) Jackman, Jeff (Deanne) Twitchell, and Devin (Leslie) Twitchell; her five cherished grandchildren: Heather McLean, Hailey McLean, McKenzie McLean, Hunter (Allyson) Twitchell, and Lily Twitchell; and her beloved sisters: Sue Jolley, Ann Jacobs, Sherrie Cottam, and Donna Gentry. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Ed; her twin sister, Judy Johnson; and her parents.
