John Joseph Lowney, age 93, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2023. He was born on April 10, 1930 in Medford, MA to Patrick and Johannah Lowney (nee Harrington). He married Beatrice Mary Deveney on June 4, 1955 in Roxbury, MA.
John was born and raised in Medford, MA. He served four years in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a master electrician and worked at Schrafft’s Candy in Charleston, MA. He was promoted to production and became Production Manager, thus solidifying his career as a Candy Man for the next 35 years. He moved his family to California and worked as Production Manager at Pearson’s Candy Company. He spent the last 20 years of his career at See’s Candies where he oversaw the production of both the southern and northern California plants.
John was a proud member of the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County, with his beloved quarter horse Leo. He enjoyed golf, bridge and entertaining with his darling wife Bea. They travelled the world and he was especially fond of visiting family in Ireland. Even before Google, he was an excellent researcher of every place he visited and liked to learn about different cultures.
John was an extremely kind and fair man who did not suffer fools. He loved his family and was always supportive. He was keenly interested in his grandchildren and their pursuits. He is survived by wife Beatrice Lowney of St George, UT; son John Patrick Lowney (Constance) of West Chester, PA; daughter Carol Mary Cogan (Paul) of Rocklin, CA; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by daughter Dr. Beatrice Ann Kunka (Scott); grandson Peter Joseph Lowney; brother William Lowney and sisters Mary Frances Wilcox, Ann Nestor and Patricia Miceli.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Hughes Mortuary. Viewing at 10:30 am followed by service at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Tonaquint Cemetery.
