Joseph Henry Bretton Sr.

Joseph H. Bretton Sr., a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on January 18, 1928, in the vibrant heart of New York City, Joseph was the beloved son of Anna Doyler and Charles Bretton.

His early years were marked by a deep sense of duty and patriotism, which led him to serve his country valiantly during World War II. Joseph proudly served as a gunner's mate aboard the USS Ranger in the Pacific theater, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a lifelong sense of resilience and determination.

After the war, Joseph returned to New York City, where he began a career as a property manager. His work ethic and dedication made him a respected figure in his field. Eventually, he relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he continued to build a life centered around his family and community.

Joseph was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for the music of the Big Band era, often filling his home with the vibrant sounds of his favorite tunes. He was also an avid traveler, exploring the beauty and diversity of the country he loved so dearly.

Those who knew Joseph will remember him for his sly sense of humor and quick wit. He had an unparalleled ability to bring laughter to those around him, and his warmth and charm endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Above all, Joseph lived his life for his children and grandchildren, always putting family first and cherishing the moments spent together.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Anna and Charles, and his son, Richard Bretton, He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his surviving children: Joseph Bretton, Laura Bretton Shortt, Lynn Cervone, Scott Bretton, and Lisa Miro, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his spirit in their hearts.

A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Joseph's life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice in his memory.
