Luella Frost Sawyer—better known as Doodie or Dee—was born on May 14, 1951, in Snowflake, Arizona. As the third of ten children born to J.H. and Nellie Frost, she learned early how to hold her own, speak her mind, and love fiercely. She created close bonds with her parents and siblings that carried her through her life.
She married Verl Johnson just a few days after turning 17, and eventually settled in Orderville, UT. Together they raised eight children of their own: Merlon, Martha, Brian, Connie, Alayna, Lorene, Denise, and Lynnette. And there were at least 20 more that they took under their wing for a time. After Verl’s passing in 1996, Dee went on to find love again. She had the joy and misfortune of marrying, and having to lay to rest a total of 5 sweethearts, eventually spending the final nine years of her life with her current husband Laval Sawyer.
Dee was a dedicated mother who helped raise Eagle Scouts, Young Women medallion recipients, and a family rich in stories—many of which she carefully preserved in handwritten history books. She was an incredible quilter. She loved to thrift, and collect treasures, (a hobby she passed down to most, if not all of her children) she baked amazing bread, and made the best chocolate peanut butter fudge.
Dee was stubborn as a mule and knew exactly how she liked things. You never had to guess what was on her mind—she would tell you. She possessed the kind of wisdom that only comes from a lifetime full of experience, and she loved sharing that wisdom with others.
She was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, she served others wherever she saw a need and lived her faith daily, a true example of the commandment to love one another.
Dee did not value wealth as the world did. Her wealth was her family and friends and true value was in those relationships she prized above all else. Her legacy is one of love, service, and grit.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 31 at 11. Chapel address is, 446 east Mangum Road Washington Utah. Her remains will be laid to rest next to her eternal companion in Orderville at a later date.
