Listen to Obituary

Tim Mertens (Mertz), passed away peacefully on Sept 12, 2025 in St George, UT. He was born in Wisconsin to Carl and Helen. Tim was the youngest of four siblings: Jeanine, Flossie and Steve who all preceded him in death.

Growing up in Wisconsin Tim developed a love of race cars, enjoying tinkering and driving starting well before obtaining any license. If you couldn’t find “Timmy” where he was supposed to be, you knew he was in the garage working on a car. Other passions were the Utah Utes basketball team and the Green Bay Packers. To the end he enjoyed watching his teams and always being a very vocal fan. His love of Nascar, basketball and the Packers was only surpassed by his commitment to AA for the last 29 yrs 10 months. His friendships, mentoring, and learning to “Live Life on Life’s terms” brought him tremendous fulfillment and joy.

Tim was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam era. After the Army he returned to school at Stevens Point Wisconsin and spent his summers at The Dells meeting some life long friends. He was a chaperone for his school on a trip to Park City UT and the rest is history.

Tim arrived in Park City in 1969 and stayed until 2015. He was a ski patroller at Park City Mtn for 12 years and a Grand Canyon river guide for 5 summers. He began his rep business in the ski industry and the ideas he saw on the road became the start of his business ventures. He owned and operated Mtn Savior, Food For Thought, Destination Sports, New Park Cyclery, Red Pine Sports, Dinosaur River Expeditions, RMCF in Jackson, and Dinosaur Brew Haus in Vernal. WHEW!!

He loved the mountains, atv-ing, running rivers, cycling and of course his many black labs traveling with him all over the west. He was fortunate to enjoy his last birthday and Christmas with his Orange County family. Thank you, Barb and Bill for the tremendous love and support throughout the last 40 years. You were such a gift in Tim’s life, the adventures on Maui, San Diego, road trips, and just family time. Thank you for supporting him, loving him and being at his side when he left us.

He is survived by his spouse Nanci, and so so many nieces, nephews, cousins and grands. Craig, Jonelle, Nicole, Madeline, Courtney and Kelly, naming only a few on the Wisconsin side. Ali, Amanda, MacKenzie, Layla and Gwen on the California side. His biggest surprise recently was meeting his daughter, Heather last year for the first time and learning of his grandchildren: Ivy, Emma, Lilly, Wyatt, and Finn.

A special thank you to all of those at the Southern Utah Veterans Home who cared for Tim with compassion and kindness this past year.
